The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, located in the town of Nova Rača in Croatia was built by the templars in 1312 and later finished by the Ivanovics. It was significantly damaged by the earthquake that hit central Croatia on December 29, 2020 – which caused substantial destruction to the church, including the tower, arches, choir area and interior. Structural reconstruction was necessary to prevent future damage and potential accidents.

Project challenges and solutions

An on-site evaluation had to occur at the historical site to develop a solution. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the church’s towerhad  vertical settlement deviations, therefore was not straight nor upright. Additionally, the building would need to be wrapped close enough for restoration work while guaranteeing anchorages and material would not create further damage on the copper roof and centuries-old masonry.

Doka utilized 3-D modelling based on dimensioned drawings plus on-site measurement and evaluation to come to up with a solution. The company then used load-bearing cantilevers above the (mentioned) attached structural elements and Doka’s Ringlock scaffolding system was adapted to the current shape of the building and support was given throughout the entire project.

The project required more than 16,684 square feet of Ringlock modular scaffolding. The total project cost amounted to €2 million, and the structural renovation was carried out and finished in 2023 by Hidroregulacija from Bjelovar.
